Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki has never been shy about recognizing talent, and his latest comments on incoming rookie Cooper Flagg turned heads. Before Flagg had even played a minute in the NBA, Nowitzki expressed confidence that the young forward has the tools to become one of the league’s next great players.
Flagg spent his freshman season at Duke University, where he averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game. He was then selected first overall in the 2025 NBA Draft by the Mavericks, a signal that expectations are sky-high.
“Everything that I saw and heard is … he’s the real deal,” Nowitzki said and praised Flagg for the way he reads the game at nearly 18 — “athletic, skills … work ethic through the roof.”
High Expectations for Cooper Flagg
Cooper Flagg, widely regarded as one of the top prospects of his class, has drawn comparisons to elite two-way forwards for his combination of size, skill, and competitiveness. Dirk Nowitzki emphasized that Flagg’s maturity and understanding of the game already stand out, even at his age. He highlighted Flagg’s ability to impact the floor on both ends, noting that his defensive instincts and offensive versatility give him a unique edge as he transitions to the professional level.
While many rookies require time to adjust to the speed and physicality of the NBA, Nowitzki suggested that Flagg’s poise could allow him to make an immediate impact. The Hall of Famer’s endorsement has only added to the growing excitement surrounding Flagg’s debut season.
With expectations continuing to build, Flagg faces the challenge of turning potential into production. If Nowitzki’s prediction holds, however, fans may be witnessing the beginning of a new star’s journey in the NBA.
