Heat’s Davion Mitchell, a ‘pitbull,’ plays best five minutes of career to stun Hawks

The Miami Heat are moving into the NBA Playoffs first round.

They’re the first 10-seed to get there, having won two play-in tournament games to advance. And it’s all thanks to Davion Mitchell’s monster overtime period.

The former Baylor guard, not in any way related to Donovan Mitchell, took over the extra session.

He drilled a trifecta of monster 3-pointers. He drew two offensive fouls. He flexed and screamed and shouted.

It was the best five minutes of his NBA career.

“He’s a dog,” guard Tyler Herro said on the broadcast after the game. “He’s a pitbull.”

It’s a cathartic Friday night for Mitchell.

He never quite panned out for the Kings after being the No. 9 overall pick in 2021. He spent time with the Raptors, too.

Finally, he was unlocked with the Heat after they acquired him midseason.

He’s putting up career-bests in points and assists since joining Miami.

Erik Spoelstra trusted him down the stretch of the fourth quarter and overtime, putting the ball in his hands and letting him make plays.

Mitchell’s final 3-pointer came off his own hustle. He skied for an unlikely offensive rebound, kicked it out, relocated and then drilled a triple.

The Heat are moving on, and the two NBA guards with last name Mitchell will face off. Davion will likely get the assignment of guarding Donovan frequently.

They aren’t related, but they’ll be on the same floor doing valiant battle.

The only reason the Heat will be there at all is because of how Davion Mitchell stole the OT show on Friday night.
