If the Miami Heat want to enjoy a drama-free second half of the season, they’ll move on from Jimmy Butler as fast as possible.
In a compelling trade with the Dallas Mavericks, the Heat could land a four-time NBA champion who played 13 seasons with the Golden State Warriors.
“The Dallas Mavericks have been one of the teams mentioned as a potential landing spot for Butler,” All U Can Heat’s Jack Simone wrote last Sunday.
“In theory, it makes sense, but in practice, it’s almost impossible to make a deal work financially.”
“This is virtually the only way to make it happen (Butler to the Heat for Klay Thompson, PJ Washington, Daniel Gafford, Dwight Powell, and a 2025 first-round pick), and the Mavs would be completely gutting their depth and losing some key players in the process.”
“Meanwhile, the Heat wouldn’t even be getting back an amazing package in terms of young pieces. A deal here just doesn’t make a ton of practical sense for either side.”
While Thompson is no longer a member of the Warriors, loyal Golden State fans will never forget his game-changing contributions.
As a 41.2% career three-point shooter who darts off as many pindown and stagger screens as need be before firing triples, Thompson was virtually impossible to keep up with in a Golden State uniform.
The five-time All-Star helped the Warriors win four championships and build a memorable dynasty in the Bay under Steve Kerr.
Thompson is still working to find his footing with the Mavericks this season.
However, with a remarkable track record in the most competitive league in the world, the Washington State product would undoubtedly add value to the Heat in Year 14.
It may be unlikely, but it’s an intriguing idea to consider during the trade season.
