Liverpool and Manchester United have a storied rivalry based on more than just local geography.
The two clubs, whose home venues are under 32 miles apart, are also the two most successful football teams that England has ever produced.
Indeed, so closely matched are they in the all-time standings that fans celebrate titles not just for the joy of their own team winning, but because it represents a slap in the face for their fierce rivals.
Below, The Sporting News breaks down how the two teams’ trophy cabinets compare.

Have Liverpool or Man United won more trophies?
As of the end of February 2025, Liverpool have the edge over Man United, with 69 total trophies compared with the Red Devils’ 68.
With Arne Slot’s team in the Carabao Cup final and on course to win the Premier League title, that gap is likely to grow before next season, although United are still in the hunt for Europa League glory.
These two historic rivals are well clear of the rest in terms of England’s most successful clubs. Arsenal are third on 49 trophies, with Manchester City a further 13 behind despite their dominant era under Pep Guardiola.

Have Liverpool or Man United won more league titles?
Man United may not have won the Premier League since 2012/13, but they are still the team with the most titles in the history of England’s top division in men’s football.
The Red Devils have been crowned champions of England 20 times, one more than Liverpool have managed. Of course, it seems inevitable that Slot’s team will equal that total in 2024/25.
Have Liverpool or Man United won more European trophies?
Liverpool’s 11 European trophies puts them comfortably ahead of United’s total of six.
The Reds have won the UEFA Champions League (previously the European Cup) six times, which is more than any other English side. They have also won the Europa League (formerly the UEFA Cup) on three occasions, as well as lifting four UEFA Super Cups and one FIFA Club World Cup.
That figure of 14 is nearly double United’s eight, which comprises three European Cup/Champions League wins, and one victory each in the Europa League, European Cup Winners’ Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and Intercontinental Cup.
