In his first season with Real Madrid, Kylian Mbappe suffered a familiar pain as Los Blancos fell short of defending their Champions League crown.
After a prolific but ultimately unfulfilling career at PSG, the forward announced via a social media video on May 10 that he would be leaving PSG on a free transfer at the end of the season. Nearly a month later, Real Madrid confirmed the news many had been waiting for: Mbappe had signed a contract to join the Spanish and European champions.
Real Madrid triumphed in last year’s European showcase, beating Borussia Dortmund in the title match, so Mbappe had reason to believe that joining Los Blancos would give him a better chance of success in the competition. Yet after an inconsistent start to life at the La Liga club, Real Madrid were eliminated from European play in the quarterfinals at the hands of Arsenal.
The real sting in the tail came in the form of the eventual winners of the 2024/25 competition. In their first season without Mbappe, PSG plotted an irresistible path to the final and won their first ever Champions League with a brutal 5-0 victory over Inter Milan at the Allianz Arena.

Has Kylian Mbappe ever won the Champions League?
Although he has won 14 club trophies throughout his career to date, plus the 2018 FIFA World Cup with France, the Champions League remains elusive for Mbappe.
The 25-year-old got closest to winning the prestigious club competition back in 2019/20 when his PSG side were beaten 1-0 by Bayern Munich in the final.
He enjoyed a run to the semifinal stage a year later, where Manchester City defeated the Ligue 1 giants 4-1 on aggregate. Previously, he reached the semis with old side Monaco back in 2016/17 before they were knocked out by Italian giants Juventus, also 4-1 on aggregate.
Even though he hasn’t won the Champions League, he has taken many individual awards in the competition.
His form in the tournament helped him make an appearance in the UEFA Team of the Year in 2018, while he’s featured in the Champions League Team of the Season four times.
Madrid made a solid start to the 2024/25 Champions League campaign with Mbappe in their ranks. He scored in their opening 3-1 win over Stuttgart, could not avert a 1-0 loss at Lille but supplied the assist for Antonio Rudiger to spark an incredible 5-2 comeback win over Borussia Dortmund in which Vinicius Junior fired a hat-trick.
Mbappe was the star of the show as Madrid swept aside regular rivals Manchester City 6-3 on aggregate in the knockout playoffs. He scored Madrid’s first equaliser in an eventual 3-2 win in Manchester before netting a superb hat-trick in the return.
Although he did not get on the scoresheet in the Round of 16 against Atletico Madrid, Mbappe did at least convert his penalty as the Madrid progressed after a shootout. The dream would come to an all-too-familiar close in the ensuing round, however, as Arsenal handled the holders easily, winning both legs to advance 5-1 on aggregate. Mbappe was held quiet across the 180 minutes, finding himself injured in the end after twisting his ankle late in the second leg.

Arguably standing out as the best player of his generation, Mbappe has shone in the Champions League throughout his career.
First bursting onto the scene with Monaco in 2016/17, the France international struck six goals in nine competition appearances with all six coming throughout the knockout rounds against Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus.
