Hansi Flick offers bold update on Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal rest plan

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick is chasing down three major trophies in the final weeks of his debut season in Catalonia.

After clinching the Spanish Super Cup back in January, the former Bayern Munich head coach is now on the hunt for the La Liga, Copa del Rey and UEFA Champions League crowns, as part of a packed schedule.

April will be decisive in Flick’s attempts for a clean sweep of trophies – with seven games on the calendar – and potentially two more if they progress in the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.

Flick will need to manage his squad carefully to prevent burnout with the majority of those matches featuring a maximum of three days rest in between.

Rotations are essential, but Flick has hinted Lamine Yamal will remain in his starting plans, despite 2024/25 being only his second full season with the first team.

From Barcelona’s 28 La Liga games so far this season, Lamine Yamal has started 23, and completed 90+ minutes in all but one of those matches, alongside nine starts from 10 in the UCL.

“I think Lamine is a very intelligent player; he knows how to manage the game. I speak to him regularly, to see how he feels, and the response is very positive. I always tell the players to tell me if they have any discomfort or anything”, as per quotes from Marca.

“They’re also responsible for their bodies. My experience as a player is that if you feel discomfort, and don’t pay attention to it, you can get injured.”

Alongside 13 goals scored in all competitions, Lamine Yamal has also racked up 11 La Liga assists, as he looks to break a long-standing record.

Lionel Messi still holds the La Liga/Barcelona record for the most assist in a single league season, with 20 in 2019/20, but the teenager will chase that down in the run-in with Messi and Luis Suarez the only Barcelona players to register 14+ league assists in one campaign.
