Hansi Flick blocking out Dani Olmo noise after La Liga decision

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick has offered an update on the ongoing registration saga involving Dani Olmo.

La Blaugrana kicked off 2025 with a 4-0 Copa del Rey win away at fourth-tier Barbastro ahead of travelling to Saudi Arabia for the Spanish Super Cup in the coming days.

Despite a winning return to action, the pre and post game focus was on Olmo’s absence, with the Spain international now unregistered as a Barcelona player.

Barcelona missed the December 31 deadline set by La Liga to secure the necessary financial boost and paperwork to extend his current registration period.

Dani Olmo’s Barcelona contract, La Liga registration

The saga over Dani Olmo’s position at Barcelona has dominated the club in recent weeks as their delicate financial arrangement came into question.

Barcelona were able to register Olmo at the start of the campaign after defender Andreas Christensen suffered a long-term injury, giving the club more flexibility in their salary budget.

However, Christensen’s return has closed that loophole, with Barcelona frantically looking to fill the financial hole needed to convince La Liga over a renewed registration.

Following two court appeal rejections of Barcelona’s request to secure a temporary extension until the end of the season for Olmo – and fellow unregistered player Pau Victor – La Liga and the RFEF (Spanish Football Federation) have now blocked the move.

La Liga rules stipulate players cannot be granted a registration licence for the same team twice in one season with Olmo’s first registration coming after the campaign start.

Barcelona plan to appeal again, with another court date set for January 7, but Flick’s comments after the Barbastro win  indicate he is planning without Olmo and Victor for this month at least.

“Everyone wants Olmo and Pau back with us. That’s all I can say. We were very involved in preparing for this game. We can’t do anything about the situation,” he said.

“The team has tried to isolate itself from these issues. We have to be professional and respond on the pitch.”

Flick also confirmed his expectation of Lamine Yamal being fit in time to board a flight to Jeddah ahead of Barcelona’s Super Cup semifinal with Athletic Club on January 8.
