Guardians sign Tanner Bibee to 5-year, $48 million extension

The Cleveland Guardians made a run to the American League Championship Series in 2024 and have extended one of their key players. Tanner Bibee has received a five-year, $48 million extension, according to The Athletic’s Zack Meisel.

“The Guardians have signed Tanner Bibee to a five-year deal with a club option for 2030,” Meisel wrote on X. “The contract will guarantee Bibee at least $48 million, per source.”

Bibee was selected in the fifth round of the 2021 MLB June Amateur Draft. He made his debut in 2023 and finished second in the American League Rookie of the Year Race. As a rookie, he had a 2.98 ERA in 25 starts. He followed up his stellar 2023 season with another great year in 2024.

Last season he had a 3.47 ERA and 187 strikeouts in 31 regular season starts. He had a 3.45 ERA in four postseason starts. His new deal includes a $2 million signing bonus, according to Meisel.

“Tanner Bibee contract details, per source: $2M signing bonus $3M in 2025, $4M in 2026, $7M in 2027, $10M in 2028, $21M in 2029 $21M club option for 2030 or a $1M buyout,” wrote Meisel on X.

In total, he is guaranteed $48 million, but if the Guardians exercise his option it will be $68 million. Bibee was named the Guardians opening day starter after Shane Bieber started the last five season openers. This spring, Bibee has seven strikeouts in nine innings of work.
