The Cleveland Guardians handed Tanner Bibee the ball on Friday to start the first game of their three-game series against the Chicago White Sox. He was coming off a hard-fought win against the Tampa Bay Rays last Saturday and was looking to continue his win streak.
That is exactly what happened, as Bibee had a career night on the mound. He pitched a complete-game shutout, giving up just two hits and striking out 10 batters on 103 pitches thrown. This was his first career shutout, and helped his club move to 76-71 on the season.
Offensively, the club was able to get the job done with two solo home runs from David Fry and Angel Martinez, while Austin Hedges and Jhonkensy Noel contributed with RBI singles. This was exactly the type of performance the Guardians needed with the regular season dwindling.
Guardians’ manager could not be happier with Tanner Bibee’s dominant performance
Guardians’ manager Stephen Vogt was happy to see his starter have complete control on Friday. He could not be happier for Tanner Bibee, showcasing that excitement afterward, via Cleveland.com’s Joe Noga.
“It was fun to not have to go get him,” said Vogt. “Fun, to not have to tell him, ‘Hey, that’s it.’ We’ve been through a lot, Tanner and I, over the last two years. Just to watch him go out and have that performance was awesome.”
Bibee has stepped up, especially during the latter portion of the season this year. He has turned into the ace that Cleveland has been looking for since Shane Bieber.
