Guardians fans are holding their breath.
Cleveland has a history of trading its stars before their contracts get too close to expiration. That’s what has brought Steven Kwan’s name into trade speculation this summer.
The Guardians could certainly benefit from keeping Kwan. He’d be their leadoff hitter through 2027 along with a strong defensive left fielder. He’s also a fan favorite.
But there’s one prediction, from Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer, that raises a huge decision if it comes to pass.
Rymer writes that the Padres could offer shortstop Leo De Vries and catcher Ethan Salas. Both are top prospects, with each having spent time in the top-10 in all of baseball on different lists over the past couple years.

Sure, the Guardians wouldn’t want to trade Kwan for limited upside. But there’s not much more upside to be found in the minor leagues than that duo.
Would the Padres trade both for Kwan? That’s hard to imagine. But if they made that offer, Cleveland would have to seriously consider it.
