Guardians’ Angel Martinez shattered glass camera lens on field in middle of Tigers playoff game

It looked like a pretty normal foul ball straight back from Angel Martinez.

Except then there was a shattering noise.

The Cleveland Guardians’ centerfielder had just deflected a Tarik Skubal fastball directly behind the plate, and it crushed an in-stadium camera right in the center of its glass lens.

The glass fell on the dirt warning track behind home plate, and it delayed the game for a few minutes while the grounds crew came out to clean up the mess.

The ESPN broadcast initially wondered whether it was one of their cameras, but it wasn’t. The broadcast had a view from just above of the ball hitting something below it, and then the angle from the centerfield camera showed the direct shattering.

The delay may have temporarily threw Skubal off his game.

He threw the first pitch back on the mound well wide outside, and then Martinez dribbled a baseball past Skubal for an infield single.

The Guardians trailed 1-0 at the time of the glass breaking with no outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Eventually, Martinez scored from second base on an infield single to tie the game.

The glass breaking appeared to have shaken things up a bit.
