The Memphis Grizzlies may need more if they want to contend for a championship. That’s exactly what an accomplished star point guard headed for free agency could gift them with.
The Grizzlies (38-23) are the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference. Their starting lineup is stacked and balanced in all facets on both ends of the floor. However, Memphis would shoot to the top of the standings, and potentially, the title race next season, if they added a game-changing backcourt player to their ranks at the first chance they get.
Washington Wizards point guard Malcolm Brogdon is headed for unrestricted free agency next summer. He will be coming off of a $22.5 million salary from the 2024-25 NBA campaign.
Brogdon is just about as good a bench option as there is in the league. The Georgia native is a former Sixth Man of the Year award winner. Not only so, but he’s also one of only nine players to have ever joined the prestigious 50-40-90 club. Brogdon is a historically efficient scorer who also dishes out 4.1 assists per game this season, 4.7 APG for his career, and peaked at 7.1 APG in 2019-20.
Able to play both guard positions, the Virginia product would bring well-rounded offense, high IQ play and strong perimeter defense to the Grizzlies’ unit. He’d give Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins the luxury of running a three-guard set with him, star PG Ja Morant and Desmond Bane, and would anchor their bench unit. He’d be a welcomed addition to their league-leading bench scoring and distributing unit.
