Last season, Girona put forth one of the least formidable defenses in La Liga, conceding a third-worst mark of 61 goals, but the Spanish side is shaking up its defense in the latter half of the summer transfer window with a potential addition coming from the English Premier League.
As The Sporting News reported yesterday, Girona is close to selling leftback Miguel Gutierrez to Napoli for a sum of 18 million Euros. Gutierrez was looked at as one of Girona’s most steady defenders during his tenure with the club, but a sale of that magnitude to a non-league opponent would be difficult to pass on.
That said, Girona is already active on the transfer market in hopes of bolstering its struggling defensive unit. On Sunday, Aug. 3, Fabrizio Romano reported that both Manchester City and Girona had reached a verbal agreement for Vitor Reis to join the La Liga club on a loan agreement, and the Brazilian 19-year old will sign his Girona contract tomorrow as the latest update in his transfer saga.

Vitor Reis joined Manchester City in January after a successful stint at Brazilian giant Palmeiras. While training under Pep Guardiola’s tutelage in England, Reis struggled to find the field and make an impact in a lineup replete with veteran experience and talent. Still, the young, promising centerback gained valuable tips on playing out from the back and establishing a counterattack while in England, and he will look to bring those same qualities to a Girona team that could use a positive influence on its back line.

Shortly after Reis joined Manchester City in January, Guardiola lauded the talented centerback for his charismatic personality while also noting that he will take some time to fully develop. So, Guardiola is keen to send Reis to Girona for a season to continue adding pieces to his defensive toolkit.
