Giants trade rumor is terrible news for Lions, 49ers, Buccaneers

A recent trade rumor regarding the New York Giants has negative implications for the Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Giants have no plans to trade edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, who has been involved in trade rumors over the last few weeks.

“Spoke to a few teams that reached out to the Giants on Kayvon Thibodeaux and they’ve been told there’s no interest in trading him, sources say. Thibodeaux is under contract through next season after the team picked up his fifth-year option and they intend on having him in 2026,” Garafolo wrote on X.

A few hours before Garafolo’s report, NFL insider Jordan Schultz said Thibodeaux was a trade candidate to watch, as teams were wondering if he was a part of New York’s long-term plan. However, the Giants have now made their stance clear on trading the young pass rusher.

Thibodeaux has been decent so far this season, as the 24-year-old has tallied 2.5 sacks and 25 quarterback pressures through eight games. The Oregon product isn’t an elite pass rusher, but he could provide a nice boost to a contender in need of pass-rushing help.

Though New York is 2-6 on the year, it doesn’t make sense to trade away a young talent like Thibodeaux just yet. The No.5 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft hasn’t lived up to expectations in the NFL thus far, but Thibodeaux still has the potential to be a pivotal long-term piece on the Giants’ defense.

Additionally, New York picked up Thibodeuax’s fifth-year option back in April, so he’s under contract until 2026.

With Thibodeaux unlikely to be moved, the Lions, 49ers, and Buccaneers will have to address their pass rushers another way. Detroit has been searching for an edge rusher to pair with Aidan Hutchinson for months, while San Francisco still needs to find a replacement for Nick Bosa, who suffered a season-ending torn ACL in September.

The Bucs could also use an upgrade in their edge rusher room, as Haason Reddick has been disappointing as the primary pass rusher.
