The San Francisco Giants made a big splash in free agency when they signed Willy Adames. After failing to sign other star free agents, they could make a trade to bring in another starter.
The Giants were in the mix to sign Corbin Burnmes but ultimately failed. However, The San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser suggested the Giants could make a trade with the Seattle Mariners to land Luis Castillo. The Giants would be parting ways with LaMonte Wade Jr. in this deal.
“Castillo’s first pro team was the Giants, at 19, before San Francisco traded him to the Marlins in the Casey McGehee deal in 2014,” wrote Slusser. “A three-time All-Star since, Castillo is coming off a down year, Seattle has a stacked rotation beyond him and he could be owed as much as $100 million over four years if a vesting option for 2028 kicks in (based on time on the injured list). He’s set to earn $24.125 million each of the next three seasons. The Mariners need a first baseman and LaMonte Wade Jr. could be a nice fit for them.”
Castillo signed a five-year, $108 million deal in 2023. He is a three-time All-Star and the Mariners’ desperate need of offense could make him a trade chip. He had a 3.64 ERA with 175 strikeouts last season. In 2023 he had a 3.34 ERA with 219 strikeouts. Over the course of his career, he has a 3.56 ERA and 1,331 strikeouts.
Wade has a career .246/.351/.411 with 53 home runs. He will be a free agent next season and could be dealt before he potentially walks. Wade has been a good presence for the Giants offense the last four seasons. He is coming off a solid season and his trade value could be as high as it’s going to get. Spotrac projects him to earn a five-year, $36 million deal on the open market. If the Giants don’t see him in their future plans, they could deal him for an ace-caliber arm like Castillo.
