Jaxson Dart had a strong college career that began at the University of Southern California before he made the decision to transfer across the country to Mississippi, where he played under head coach Lane Kiffin. Dart made a significant impact at Ole Miss, but when it comes to the NFL, he played in a college system that wasn’t ideal for transitioning to a pro-style offense.
The Giants traded up in the draft to select Dart—he was their guy from the beginning. Interestingly, it was actually revealed the night before the draft that Dart would be heading to New York, though not by the team itself. The news came from Giants GM Joe Schoen’s son.
“Apparently Giants GM Joe Schoen’s son posted a Jaxson Dart highlight reel on IG this NFL Draft eve,” Warren Sharp posted.
During the offseason, the Giants signed veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, with a clear starter already emerging.
“However, a clear leader has already emerged with Giants general manager Joe Schoen revealing that Wilson will be getting first-team reps during the spring,” Nate Lunak wrote.
For now, the plan is for Dart to sit behind the two veteran quarterbacks this season.

“So again, Jaxson’s going to come in, he’s got to learn the offense, there’s a lot to learn, these NFL offenses are hard to grasp and pick up and then be able to go out and execute, so the ability for him to learn and sit behind two consummate pros already will be beneficial for him,” Schoen said.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN believes Dart’s time as a backup could extend beyond just this season—potentially into next year as well.
“The stage is set for Jaxson Dart to sit an extended period,” Fowler said on air.
The Giants appear committed to a long-term development plan for Dart, similar to how the Packers handled Jordan Love. So far, that strategy has proven effective.
