The New York Giants’ surge of energy came to a heartbreaking halt today after rookie running back Cam Skattebo was carted off the field with what appeared to be a severe right ankle injury against the Philadelphia Eagles. The injury occurred in the second quarter when the fourth-round pick landed awkwardly while attempting a leaping catch over the middle of the field.
The sight of the charismatic running back immediately in visible pain and quickly surrounded by teammates —including a visibly distraught quarterback Jaxson Dart — suggested the injury is season-ending. Skattebo, a former Arizona State standout, had quickly become the darling of the Giants’ offense, injecting a rare spark with 398 rushing yards and six total touchdowns through the first seven weeks, including a benchmark three-touchdown performance against the Eagles two weeks prior.
This devastating loss— coming on the same day the team hoped to build on its recent momentum — leaves the Giants’ already thin backfield relying heavily on Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary. For a New York team that has already lost star wide receiver Malik Nabers to injury this season, Skattebo’s brutal exit is a crushing blow that likely sends the general manager back to the trade market before the deadline.

Giants RB depth chart
Without Skattebo, it will be Tyrone Tracy Jr. taking back the RB1 role. Here’s a look at the other New York options in backfield.
| Position | Player |
| 1 | Cam Skattebo (injured) |
| 2 | Tyrone Tracy Jr. |
| 3 | Devin Singletary |
1. Cam Skattebo
Skattebo has been one of the most exciting young players in the NFL; he had 98 carries for 398 yards and five touchdowns in seven games this season.
On Sunday against the Eagles, Skattebo was brought down in the second quarter of the game and suffered a gruesome ankle injury. The rookie was carted off the field with an air cast on his right ankle.
At Arizona State, Skattebo became the first player in school history to record more than 2,000 scrimmage yards in a season, helping lead the Sun Devils to a Big 12 championship and their first College Football Playoff appearance. He earned first-team All-America and All-Big 12 honors and finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting.
The Giants drafted him with the 105th overall pick in April.

2. Tryone Tracy Jr.
Tracy Jr. was drafted by the Giants in the fifth round (166th overall) of the 2024 NFL Draft. His collegiate career finished with strong rushing totals at Purdue, including leading the Big Ten in yards per carry in 2023, while also maintaining value as a return specialist.
Tracy immediately proved his value to the Giants in his rookie 2024 season, becoming an unexpected offensive factor. He finished the year as the team’s leading rusher with 839 yards and tallied 1,123 scrimmage yards, becoming the second-most productive rookie running back in Giants history behind only Saquon Barkley. This success earned him a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team.
While 2025 saw him slide into a complementary role behind rookie Cam Skattebo, the recent injury to Skattebo has thrust Tracy back into the lead role.

3. Devin Singletary
Singletary has been a steady producer throughout his career. A fourth-round pick, he spent four seasons with the Buffalo Bills and led the team in rushing each year. In 2023, he signed with the Houston Texans and posted a career-high 898 rushing yards.
Following the departure of Saquon Barkley in 2024, the Giants signed Singletary to a three-year, $16.5 million contract to serve as a veteran anchor. Reunited with head coach Brian Daboll from their time in Buffalo, he ran for 437 yards last season while ceding lead-back duties to Tyrone Tracy Jr.
From 2022-24, Singletary topped 1,000 scrimmage yards each season. His numbers have dipped early in 2025, but with Tracy sidelined, he has an opportunity to carve out a bigger role in New York’s offense.
Entering Sunday, Singletary had only 84 yards on 26 carries this season.
