The San Francisco Giants are a bit of a trade deadline mystery.
Do they buy? Do they sell? Do they stand pat and hope the already-made Rafael Devers trade makes all the difference?
ESPN’s MLB insider Jeff Passan isn’t even sure. But in his breakdown of the Giants on Wednesday, he did note a few players who could be traded away in a bit of a soft sell.
“Posey could also pivot the other way and do a soft-offload, starting with (Tyler) Rogers, a prolific sidearmer — he leads MLB with 49 appearances — who has walked only four hitters and is a free agent this winter,” Passan writes. “Others who could move include infielder Wilmer Flores, outfielder Mike Yastrzemski and right-hander Justin Verlander, who, at 42, is allowing more than a baserunner and a half per inning.”

Moving Flores would allow Devers to play first base full time.
Yaz could still be a solid starting outfielder for a contender.
Verlander’s value is hard to figure out, but if the cost was low enough, someone else would probably take the chance on unlocking a bit of his past ability.
This next week-plus will be quite interesting in San Francisco. The Giants really could go in any direction.
