The San Francisco Giants recently made an announcement about Barry Bonds. Bonds’ stats are among the best in history, but some controversy has kept him out of the Hall of Fame.
Giants CEO Larry Baer announced the team will build a statue to honor Bonds outside of Oracle Park. He will join legends like Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Orlando Cepeda, Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry.
“You know what, no disagreement from us on that topic,” Baer said on “The Morning Roast.” “On the radar, I would say it’s on the radar. Barry is deserving of a statue and I would say, should be next up. We don’t have the exact location and the exact date and the exact timing, but you’re saying things that we’re totally in sync with.
“You probably notice, Barry’s around a lot, more recently this year and last year as well … It’s coming. All I can say is it’s coming.”
Bonds is a seven-time MVP, 14-time All-Star, eight-time Gold Glover, 12-time Silver Slugger and two-time batting champion. However, despite being the all-time home run leader with 762, all-time walk leader with 2,558 and all-time WAR leader at 162.8, Bonds is not in the Hall of Fame. Bonds’ involvement with the steroid era of baseball has led to some controversy about his place in MLB history.

He was on the Baseball Writers’ Association of America ballot for 10 seasons, but never received the required 75% of votes. The Giants watched Bonds dominate in their uniform for 15 seasons. While the Hall of Fame might not recognize him, the Giants are clearly okay with honoring him. However, their decision to build him a statue may not be accepted by everyone in baseball.
