The San Francisco Giants have made two key moves this offseason. Back in December, they signed Willy Adames to a seven-year, $182 million contract and on Tuesday, they brought in Justin Verlander on a one-year, $15 million deal.
But the Giants may not be done. They seem to have their sights set on contending in 2025 and returning to the postseason for the first time since 2021.
They could also potentially look to make trades in order to bolster their roster. Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report listed them as a possible trade fit for Marcus Stroman. San Francisco would be sending Marco Luciano to the New York Yankees in this hypothetical trade.
“The Giants haven’t buried Luciano, per se, but there isn’t room for him on an infield with Matt Chapman at third, Willy Adames at short and Tyler Fitzgerald at second,” Rymer wrote.
“A trade for Stroman would therefore result in the Giants having both an iron-clad starting five and one of the deeper bullpens in the National League. They’ll need both to contend in the NL West this year.”
Stroman went 10-9 with a 4.31 ERA in 29 starts and one relief appearance with the Yankees in 2024. He also pitched 154 2/3 innings and struck out 113 batters last year.
He might only be a rental for San Francisco, as he has a player option for 2026 and could potentially decline it. But having another veteran presence in the mix after signing Verlander would give the Giants a great chance to at least contend for a Wild Card spot.
They won 80 games last year and missed the postseason. But they could certainly use another starter in their rotation if they want to make it to October in 2025.
It will be interesting to see if they can work something out with the Yankees for Stroman.
