The San Francisco Giants have made a few key moves this offseason. They first signed Willy Adames to a seven-year, $182 million contract back in December. Earlier this week, they signed Justin Verlander to a one-year, $15 million contract.
San Francisco may also not be done just yet. They could use a little more help in their starting rotation, especially after losing Blake Snell to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
They could look to address this by adding a starter via trade. Mike Axisa of CBS Sports notes that they could be a fit for right-hander Marcus Stroman.
“One year of an expensive veteran depth starter could help a team like the Angels, Giants, or Rangers. Stroman does not have any no-trade protection, though he will gain an $18 million player option for 2026 with 140 innings pitched in 2025,” Axisa wrote.
Stroman, a two-time All-Star, went 10-9 with a 4.31 ERA in 29 starts and one relief appearance with the New York Yankees in 2024. He also pitched 154 2/3 innings and struck out 113 batters.
He signed a two-year, $37 million deal with New York last offseason. If he can remain healthy and return to his old form, he could be a valuable addition for the Giants if they are so inclined to add him.
Stroman has pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets and Chicago Cubs in addition to the Yankees. His best season to date came in 2017 when he went 13-9 with a 3.09 ERA in Toronto.
Stroman, Verlander and Logan Webb could make up a very strong top three in San Francisco’s rotation. We’ll see if the Giants decide to pursue him.
