Giants legend Willie Mays may soon lose historic record to NL West superstar

Willie Mays remains the ideal baseball player. There wasn’t a thing on the diamond he couldn’t do.

The Giants legend may soon see one of his coolest, lesser-known records fall, though.

Arizona Diamondbacks superstar outfielder Corbin Carroll has already matched 1955 Mays in an impressive feat.

Back in 1955 for the New York Giants, Mays had four games with multiple home runs and two games with multiple triples.

No one has done that since, until now.

Carroll has equaled the feat by the middle of June. OptaStats provided the details.

The lefty-swinging Carroll has half a season to add more multi-power games like these. It’s quite remarkable that he’s already up to those tallies.

It doesn’t take away from Mays’ brilliance, though, rather just making Carroll look extra special.

In Mays’ 1955 season for the New York Giants, he finished with a .319 average and .659 slugging. He had 18 doubles, 13 triples and 51 homers, leading the league in both triples and HRs.

That was his age-24 season, the same that Carroll is playing right now.

The pair also has size in common. Carroll is listed at 5-foot-10, 165 pounds. Mays was listed at 5-10, 170.

Baseball is a beautiful game in which size doesn’t necessarily equal power. Mays is a historic example of that, and Carroll is carrying that beacon in the modern game.
