The San Francisco Giants already answered one of its glaring questions with who will be managing the club in the future. The club fired Bob Melvin and quickly replaced him with Tony Vitello, the now former skipper at the University of Tennessee.
Now with Vitello on board, the team can shift its focus to filling other holes. They could use another reliable backend reliever to help stabilize their bullpen.
San Francisco traded away veteran Tyler Rogers and Randy Rodriguez, who the club is high on, is expected to miss the 2026 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Giants could take a gamble on failed Mets reliever over the winter
There will be a good number of relief pitchers looking to find their next team over the winter. One reliever that could fall into San Francisco’s hands is Ryan Helsley.
Helsley is coming off a rocky second half of the season after he was traded to the New York Mets. However, he was the 2024 Reliever of the Year, and MLB’s Mark Feinsand believes he could be a good fit for the Giants.
“Still, the two-time All-Star had established himself as one of the top closers in the game during the three previous seasons, pitching to a 1.83 ERA while converting 82 saves in 95 opportunities, so his two-month hiccup in New York shouldn’t define his market this offseason.”
Feinsand still has faith that Helsley can perform at the highest level, and teams should not solely view him from his two months of struggles in New York.
Other potential fits listed were the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers. So, if San Francisco wants to take a gamble on him, they may want to be aggressive in their pursuit.
