Giants $4 million tight end in danger of being cut to save salary-cap space

With free agency right around the corner, the New York Giants are expected to be among the teams most active in the market.

Even with a projected $50 million in salary-cap space, there are several moves New York can make to free up some money in order to help them bounce back from the disastrous 3-14 season they’re coming off.

One way to do that would be to part ways with some players who lack guaranteed money going into the upcoming season.

In proposing potential cut candidates for each NFL team, Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac believes Giants tight end Daniel Bellinger could be on the chopping block this offseason.

“Bellinger’s targets and subsequent production have fallen off of a cliff in each of the past two seasons in NY, putting his future there very much in doubt. The former 4th Round pick still secured a Proven Performance escalator, taking his 2025 salary north of $3.2M, but the Giants can free all of it up by moving on this March,” Ginnitti wrote.

Despite coming in as a part of Joe Schoen’s first draft class, Bellinger hasn’t made as much of an impact as the team would have hoped. The former fourth-round pick has seen decreased production in each season he’s been in the league.

Though the San Diego State product showed promise with a 30-268-2 receiving line during his rookie season, he’s combined for just 39 receptions and 380 yards in the two seasons since then. A portion of that is due to the quarterback situation, but he’s failed to break through.

On top of that, the Giants seemingly have a brighter future at the position with Theo Johnson. The uber-athletic tight end showed flashes during his rookie season before it was cut short due to a foot injury.

The Giants aren’t strapped for cash but in a make-or-break offseason, any little bit helps.
