The New York Knicks have an interesting decision to make in the near future.
After making the Eastern Conference Finals last season, the Knicks are in a position to be one of the top teams in the league again next season. Although the Knicks made headlines with their coaching change, they’ve made few moves to the roster this offseason.
While the same core will be back in town again next season, they have a key decision to make on the future beyond next season. This summer, the Knicks could extend Mikal Bridges with a four-year, $156 million deal.
If the Knicks are comfortable running back this unit for the foreseeable future, it might be an easy decision for New York to pull the trigger. However, the team might opt to wait on a potential Bridges extension to go star hunting, as laid out by Empire Sports Media’s Alexander Wilson.
One of the biggest storylines in the NBA this offseason has been the Milwaukee Bucks’ handling of Giannis Antetokounmpo. While the Bucks star appears content for the time being, his time in Milwaukee might be on its final leg.
With the Bucks’ hopes of contending for a title seeming to dwindle in recent years, Antetokounmpo’s quest to win another championship could lead him to request or a trade or simply leave in free agency. In any case, it would be wise for the Knicks to have some flexibility.
Antetokounmpo is an ambitious target for New York, but it might not be so crazy to wait a bit longer on Bridges to keep the door open for one of the league’s biggest names.
