Germany legend urges Man City to sign out-of-favor Barcelona star

Manchester City have been busy in the summer transfer window bringing in star additions to their squad. The team has already added Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Aït-Nouri, and Marcus Bettinelli.

Pep Guardiola is also expecting some departures, with Kevin De Bruyne going to Napoli and Jack Grealish also set to exit.

The Man City manager has some thinking to do about what positions he needs to strengthen, and German legend Lothar Matthäus has given Guardiola a plea to sign one Barcelona player to bolster his squad.

Who does Lothar Matthäus want Man City to sign?

Matthäus has encouraged Guardiola to consider signing Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

In his column for Sky Sports Germany, the former German international wrote, “Six English clubs will be playing there next season, and none of them have a goalkeeper strong enough to say, ‘Ter Stegen wouldn’t be a reinforcement for us.’

“I don’t know what Manchester City’s plans are, but I think they’re not too happy with Ederson. I think ter Stegen could definitely be a goalkeeper for the Citizens for the next three or four years.”

Ter Stegen has to face competition from Wojciech Szczesny and Joan Garcia at Barcelona. The former is reportedly signing a new contract at the club, while Garcia has just signed from Espanyol.

The former player went on to write, “If Barca relies on another goalkeeper, it’s a dangerous bet for ter Stegen. At some point, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann will no longer be able to justify starting him if he’s only sitting on the bench at Barcelona.”

Ter Stegen has a vast amount of experience he could bring to challenge Ederson for the number-one position at Manchester City.
