George Springer injury update: Blue Jays star back in the lineup for Game 6 after oblique soreness

George Springer has been a guiding light for a Toronto Blue Jays team thin on championship experience, but after Game 3 his status for the remainder of the World Series came into question.

Springer already spent time playing through pain when he refused to sit out after fouling a ball off the top of his knee during Game 5 of the ALCS, helping the Blue Jays win the pennant with victories in Games 6 and 7, but he had to leave a game early for the second time in October after grabbing at his side following a swing Monday.

Springer was at the plate with Game 3 tied at four and the Blue Jays needing a rally. He was replaced by Ty France, whose last plate appearance came more than a month earlier on Sept. 21.

Here are the latest updates on Springer’s injury and his status going forward.

OCTOBER 31 UPDATE: After missing Games 4 and 5, Springer is back in the lineup with the Blue Jays one win away from the World Series.

Springer appeared to grab at his side after a swing while facing Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Justin Wrobleski in Monday’s Game 3. After a brief evaluation by manager John Schneider and the Blue Jays’ medical staff, Springer was removed and replaced at the plate by France.

He missed Games 4 and 5 with oblique discomfort.

While the Blue Jays haven’t given any updates on Springer’s exact injury, his reaction sparked fears of an oblique injury, which isn’t uncommon for hitters because of how forcefully they turn their bodies while swinging.

An oblique strain typically comes with a recovery time of at least a few weeks — Springer missed time with the injury during his first season with the Blue Jays — but Toronto will hope he only tweaked something in his side.

The World Series schedule gives Springer little time to recover. The series only has one more off day on Thursday, with Game 4 set for Tuesday and Game 5 set for Wednesday.

As it turns out, Springer is not in the lineup for Game 4.

Springer sat out all of Game 4 as the Blue Jays came back to tie the series. For Game 5, while Springer gave it a try, he started the game on the bench and did not make an appearance.

The Blue Jays won both games in Springer’s absence to take a 3-2 lead back to Toronto.
