Gary O’Neil’s Monday Night Football appearance has put him in the shop window

An out-of-work manager appearing on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football is always a clear sign that they desire to get back on the touchline.

Due to the show’s focus on tactical analysis, it is a fantastic opportunity for coaches to showcase their insight into the game.

Gary O’Neil was on the show this week alongside Dave Jones and Jamie Carragher to talk through his former team, West Ham United’s 2-0 loss to Brentford.

This was not O’Neil’s first appearance on Monday Night Football, as he also impressed whilst he was still the manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

O’Neil had an impressive first season at Wolves under the difficult circumstances of taking the job at the last minute when Julen Lopetegui quit.

However, as Wolves continued to let their top players, including Max Kilman and Pedro Neto, leave the club, O’Neil’s team struggled and was sacked mid-way through his second campaign.

O’Neil was previously at AFC Bournemouth, where he took over from Scott Parker to ensure Premier League survival for the Cherries.

However, for his next job, O’Neil may have to drop down to the Championship.

What will be Gary O’Neil’s next job?

Football Insider has reported that “O’Neil is a top contender to replace Chris Davies as the Birmingham City manager.”

Birmingham is currently 13th in the Championship, which has put Davies under increasing pressure.

The club, which has NFL legend Tom Brady as a minority owner, has ambitions of promotion the the Premier League despite only just coming up from League One.

O’Neil has also been linked with replacing Liam Manning at Norwich City. The Canaries would be fitting for O’Neil as he used to play for them.

He has not managed yet in the Championship, but knows the division from his time as a player.

O’Neil achieved promotion from the Championship three times via the playoffs with West Ham, Norwich, and Queens Park Rangers.
