Boston is finally on the board this MLB offseason.
The Red Sox are acquiring left-handed starter Garrett Crochet in a trade with the White Sox, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. After searching for starting pitching on the free agent market, Boston lands a name that it has been attached to for quite some time.
The news of the Crochet deal comes on the heels of the Max Fried signing with the Yankees. The two AL East rivals found themselves in a bidding war for the former Braves ace before the lefty ended up deciding on The Bronx. The Red Sox also missed out on free agent Blake Snell, who signed with the defending World Series champion Dodgers.
Less than 24 hours after that decision, the Red Sox land a much-needed southpaw to its pitching rotation. Crochet joins a young group of starters that include right-handers Tanner Houck, Brayan Bello and Kutter Crawford.
The 25-year-old posted a 3.58 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 32 starts last season for the White Sox, finishing seventh in the league in strikeouts with 209.
Here’s everything to know about the Crochet trade to the Red Sox.

The Red Sox desperately needed to add a lefty to its rotation. After missing out on Snell and Fried, GM Craig Breslow turned to the trade market. Boston and Crochet were tied in rumors for weeks, and Fenway Park will be the new home for the southpaw.
Crochet is set to begin his fifth season in the big leagues. The No. 11 overall pick from 2020, he made his MLB debut that same season with the White Sox, however, he started in a reliever role for Chicago. It was not until the 2024 season that he got his first crack in the starting rotation.
For his career, Crochet owns a 3.29 ERA and 1.16 WHIP across 104 appearances.
The White Sox are getting four players in the deal, the headliners being catcher Kyle Teel and outfielder Braden Montgomery, the No. 4 and No. 5 prospects in the Red Sox system.
Teel is Boston’s first-round pick from 2023 and No. 4 prospect. He originally was set to declare for the MLB Draft in 2020 as one of the top high school catching prospects, but instead opted to play college baseball at Virginia. In 2024, he began his season in Double-A before earning a midseason promotion to Triple-A. He batted .255 with two home runs and 18 RBIs with the Worcester Red Sox in Triple-A.
Projecting to eventually become an everyday starting catcher, Teel could make the White Sox roster in 2025 with Chicago lacking quality options behind the plate.
Montgomery is Boston’s first-round pick from 2024 and its No. 5 prospect. The switch-hitting outfielder was one of the top two-way players that could have gone in the 2021 MLB Draft, but he decided to attend Stanford instead, eventually transferring to Texas A&M. The outfield prospect has yet to play at the professional level, so he will be more of a project for the White Sox to develop.
Chase Meidroth is listed as the No. 11 prospect for the Red Sox. The infielder played the entire 2024 season in Triple-A, batting .293 with an OPS of .837. He recorded seven home runs and 57 RBIs for Worcester.
Wikelman Gonzalez is the No. 14 prospect for the Red Sox. The right-hander made 24 appearances and 19 starts in Triple-A in 2024, recording a 4.73 ERA across 83.2 innings.
