Francisco Lindor announces surprise injury, plans to play through ‘significant’ pain

The New York Mets got some concerning news on Francisco Lindor. The superstar announced he is dealing with an injury that he will try to play through.

Lindor was absent from the Mets’ lineup today, and while talking to the media, he revealed he has a broken pinky toe on his right foot. Even though he is not playing today, he plans to avoid a stint on the injured list, according to Newsday’s Laura Albanese.

“As of now, He’s avoiding an IL stint, he said,” Albanese wrote on X. “It’ll be a pain management issue, but he says he’s in a significant amount of pain now. Is walking with a limp.”

Lindor describes his status as “day by day,” and wants to be back in the lineup soon.

“Day by day,” Lindor said to reporters when asked about his injury status. “Hopefully, I feel good enough to play sooner rather than later. We’ll see and take it day by day. I trust the trainers and how they go about it.”

Losing Lindor would be a huge blow to the Mets. He was perhaps the biggest reason for their turnaround last year, and he helped carry them to the postseason. This year he has a .279/.353/.490 slash line and 14 home runs. He was the National League MVP Award runner-up last season and looked to be on his way to his fifth career All-Star game this year.

The best-case scenario is that he is back in the lineup this week, even if it is as a designated hitter. The Mets are leading the National League East, but if Lindor is out, the Philadelphia Phillies would have a great opportunity to reclaim the top spot.
