France boss Didier Deschamps reveals truth behind Ibrahima Konate substitution after injury scare

Liverpool fans feared the worst when Ibrahima Konate was taken off at halftime during France’s 2-0 loss to Croatia in the UEFA Nations League.

However, national team boss Didier Deschamps has now clarified the situation, putting to rest concerns over a serious injury.

The 25-year-old defender started the match alongside William Saliba but was replaced by Dayot Upamecano at the break.

France’s official social media initially suggested that Konate had picked up an injury, adding to the worries of Liverpool supporters.

But Deschamps later explained that the decision to substitute him was purely tactical.

Deschamps explains Konate substitution

Konate’s performance in the first half raised some concerns, particularly after he conceded an early penalty for handball.

Although France goalkeeper Mike Maignan saved the spot-kick, Croatia still found the net twice through Ante Budimir and Ivan Perisic.

Speaking after the match, Deschamps addressed Konate’s early exit. “I know it’s tough, but I saw him struggling, not at his best, so I preferred to substitute him,” the France coach stated.

Despite Deschamps’ reassurance, Liverpool will still monitor the defender closely.

The club has already suffered a couple of injury setbacks during the international break, with midfielder Ryan Gravenberch withdrawing from the Netherlands squad and returning to Merseyside for assessment.

Goalkeeper Alisson Becker also faced a worrying moment when he was forced off during Brazil’s 2-1 win over Colombia due to a suspected concussion.

Brazil’s team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar provided an update, explaining the situation. “Alisson suffered a head injury. He was replaced due to a suspected concussion, so now we will follow the protocol recommended by the CBF,” he said.

For now, Liverpool will be relieved that Konate’s situation is not serious. But with crucial fixtures ahead, the club will be keeping a close eye on all its returning internationals.
