Former Yankees slugger makes surprising career move after release from White Sox

Former New York Yankees slugger Joey Gallo is set to make a position change.

Gallo was granted his unconditional release from the Chicago White Sox. Gallo had been in camp on a minor league deal, but was released as he revealed on social media he plans to convert to a pitcher.

“It’s been fun outfield,” Gallo wrote, followed by “Just to be clear, I will be pitching.”

Gallo has no professional experience as a pitcher, but did pitch in high school, even throwing a no-hitter.

By getting his release by the White Sox, Gallo will search for a new minor league deal with any Major League Baseball team interested in him as a pitcher. He was known for his arm in the outfield and will look to turn that into being an effective pitcher.

Gallo is a two-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove Award winner. The outfielder played with the Washington Nationals in 2024, hitting .161 with 10 home runs and 27 RBIs. Gallo has played for the Texas Rangers, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Minnesota Twins.

With the Yankees, Gallo played in parts of two seasons hitting .159 with 25 home runs and 46 RBIs in 140 games. In his MLB career, Gallo has played in 939 games hitting .194 with 208 home runs and 453 RBIs.

Gallo has earned just over $44 million in his career, according to Spotrac. He was selected in the first round of the 2012 MLB Draft and made his debut in 2015 with the Rangers.
