Former USMNT star reveals formula to defeat Lionel Messi and David Beckham’s Inter Miami

Inter Miami had a great start to the season, with an eight-match unbeaten streak in Major League Soccer.

However, the Herons seemed to have hit a slippery slope, winning only one out of their last five matches across competitions. Inter Miami currently stand fifth in the MLS table with 22 points in 12 matches.

Despite having prominent names with illustrious experience in the squad, with the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Sergio Busquets among others, Inter Miami are yet to meet the expected level of success.

Now, former U.S. striker Herculez Gomez believes that Inter Miami’s lack of satisfactory results has led to displays of frustration among players and also the club’s co-owner, David Beckham.

Inter Miami faced a 4-1 defeat against Minnesota United in the MLS on May 10 at Allianz Field. Following the loss, Minnesota made two posts on social media as a jibe at the Herons.

Beckham hit out at Minnesota by commenting on both posts, asking them to ‘show respect.’

While speaking on Futbol Americas, Gomez addressed Beckham’s comments and claimed that Minnesota United ‘got underneath his skin.’

What did Herculez Gomez say about David Beckham and Inter Miami?

Gomez spoke about how Inter Miami’s unflattering result is affecting Beckham & Co.

While referring to the club as the Man United legend’s ‘baby,’ the 43-year-old said (comments via GOAL) that Beckham’s ‘franchise’ is ‘going down the drain.’ Gomez also pointed out that other teams ‘have figured Inter Miami out,’ which is leading to the Herons’ losses.

“It’s not just one post and he makes a comment. I think he was ruffled by it, but it was another one, it was the Tifo as well, and David Beckham responding to the tifo as well. Two separate times, two Instagram posts, and they got underneath his skin, and why are they getting underneath his skin? Because teams are figuring Inter Miami out,” he said.

“That is four defeats in the last five games, that is David Beckham’s baby, that is what Beckham has waited for to build this franchise, and it’s going down the drain. Forgive me when I say down the drain because they’ve done a lot of good things, but he’s starting to realise teams have figured Inter Miami out. If you are disciplined, if you are physical, if you have athleticism in transition and if you are good on set-pieces, you can hurt Inter Miami,” added Gomez.

Gomez claimed that Inter Miami’s lack of ‘fresh legs’ is another reason for their struggles on the pitch.

“Because Inter Miami is many things, but they don’t have fresh legs, they don’t have a lot of quality when it comes to keeping up with teams with pace. This has been figured out from Atlanta United (post-season) to C.F. Monterrey to LAFC at times to Vancouver, who made them look juvenile,” he said.

Gomez also believes that what adds to Beckham’s list of concerns is seeing his players, including Messi, ‘get frustrated’ and ‘lashing out.’

“What is worse for David Beckham is he is seeing his prized asset, because Lionel Messi is an asset, get frustrated, be frustrated and start lashing out if you will,” he said.

“We saw it last week and we’re seeing his stars like Sergio Busquets tell DAZN in Spain that ‘We’re not good enough to compete in the Club World Cup.’ So he’s seeing all his star players speaking out, lashing out, and he’s like, ‘Not you too, Minnesota United, not now. Nope!” concluded Gomez.

In Inter Miami’s last MLS clash, which was against San Jose Earthquakes and ended in a 3-3 draw, Messi received a yellow card over a dragged argument with the referee.

It remains to be seen if Messi & Co. will be returning to their winning ways in Inter Miami’s next MLS clash against Orlando City on May 18 at Chase Stadium.
