Former Silver Slugger expected to leave the Mets in free agency

Ahead of the trade deadline, the New York Mets made a deal with the Baltimore Orioles to acquire outfielder Cedric Mullins. In exchange for Mullins, New York sent Raimon Gomez, Anthony Nunez, and Chandler Marsh over to Baltimore.

It was a great trade for the Mets as they did not have to part ways with any of their top prospects. Adding Mullins also gave them a boost in the outfield, allowing them to stop platooning Jeff McNeil and Tyrone Taylor in center field.

However, his future in New York is cloudy. He is currently working on a one-year, $8.75 million deal this season, and will be a free agent when the season comes to an end.

Cedric Mullins is expected to leave New York in free agency

Getting a deal done with Mullins was nearly a no-brainer for the Mets. He did not cost much, especially with Baltimore paying a portion of his salary, and they could part ways with him at the end of the season if they felt it was necessary.

According to Fansided’s Mark Powell, he believes that will be the case here. He recently came out with an article detailing one player from MLB’s contending teams who will not be back next season.

“Turnover on the New York Mets roster is inevitable with David Stearns calling the shots. He’d DFA his grandparents if it meant taking a chance on a submarine pitcher on the waiver wire. The team will look a lot different between now and next season. One stone cold mortal lock to be gone is Cedric Mullins. He was always meant to be a rental. Nothing has changed.”
