The Boston Red Sox recently acquired Nathaniel Lowe off of waivers and he has been a smash hit for them, bringing power hitting to first base. However, this meant they needed to designate Abraham Toro for assignment, the man holding it down previously.
However, Toro hasn’t left completely. According to Masslives’ Red Sox insider Chris Cotillo, Toro cleared waivers, and rejoined the Sox via AAA Worcester.

Toro was also a replacement first baseman, taking the role after the original starter, Triston Casas, ruptured his patellar tendon. Toro was slashing .239/.289/.371/.659 with seven home runs when he was DFA’d.
While those seem like decent backup numbers, Toro was one of the worst hitters in baseball since July 1st. He was hitting .185 with 22 hits, two homers, 11 RBI, and 12 runs scored in 35 games played.
That’s why Lowe was needed, and he’s been a clear upgrade. In five games with the Sox, he’s already hitting .357 with five hits, two being doubles, one being a homer, and has 5 RBI and four runs scored.

Having Toro on the roster, even in AAA, is still a good thing though. Lowe is the only true first baseman on the team now, and at least he has two backups, Romy Gonzalez and Toro, to take his spot if he were to go down.
Hopefully Toro regains his bat in AAA too, as you never know if he will be needed.
