Brandon Hyde started as the Baltimore Orioles manager in 2019. He dealt with the club’s ups and downs throughout his tenure.
Hyde saw the darkest days in his beginning and then saw success from 2022 to 2024. In 2025, things went sideways for him and the Orioles. They started the season 15-28 before they fired him on May 17. When Hyde was fired that day, many other Baltimore fans felt Mike Elias should have been fired as the general manager that day. Some felt like Hyde got a raw deal. He had a 421-492 record as manager.

On Thursday, the former Orioles skipper appeared on MLB Network to talk about what went wrong at the start of the 2025 season, eventually leading to his firing. Hyde said,
“We just got to a terrible start this year. I think there’s a lot of reasons behind it. But we just had a tough time winning games. You know, we had three really good years. You go back, where we exceeded a ton of expectations for a couple years there in ’22 and ’23. And in ’24, I think we were the first team to 70 wins last year, and then had a ton of injuries late in the year and we got bounced out of the postseason… That was disappointing. And then just had a tough start to the year this year, and [Baltimore’s front office] felt like they needed to make a change.”
When Hyde was fired, Tony Mansolino took over as the interim manager. Baltimore has a 60-74 overall record this season and is in last place in the American League East. This shows that the problems with this team went way deeper than just the manager.
The starting pitching and bullpen were not good, either. They will need to address both of those issues in the offseason. Hyde has not spoken much since the firing, but this was the first time he spoke to the media about it. This also shows that he was the scapegoat for many of the Orolies’ issues that transpired later in the 2025 MLB season.
