Former national team coach approves Luis Diaz’s move to Bayern Munich

After missing on Florian Wirtz and Nico Williams, Bayern Munich have finally secured Luis Diaz from Liverpool, as an exciting addition to their attack.

The Bavarians have focused on reinforcements for the left-side of their forward line after Leroy Sane decided to move on to Galatasaray earlier this summer.

While Diaz was not Bayern Munich’s prime target heading into the transfer window, the club are confident he can be a game changer for the club in 2025/26 and beyond.

As per The Athletic, the German champions feel the Colombian was the best attacker available in the market and that powered their determination to sign the 28-year-old.

There is real positivity of Diaz suiting the style of play Vincent Kompany has incorporated in Bavaria, via his intense pressing and work rate, whilst also racking up 22 goal contributions  last season.

Despite the negativity on social media amongst some fans, Kompany has thrown his support behind Diaz, as an ideal partner for Harry Kane and Co.

Alongside his superb form at Liverpool, Diaz has been exceptional for Colombia, and his former national team coach Reinaldo Rueda has lauded his move to Germany.

As part of an interview with Sport1, Rueda said: “I’m very happy he chose Bayern. I wish him all the very best. I’m sure Vincent Kompany will give him the trust he needs. Liverpool was, of course, a great period in his career, but if everything goes well, Bayern can become Luis Diaz’s second great success story.

“If he embraces German culture and the language, and the club does everything they can to ensure the integration of his family, I believe we will see the success and performances we want and that he is capable of.”

Diaz now becomes the third Colombian to feature for Bayern Munich after Adolfo Valencia and James Rodriguez.

Rodriguez had a great loan stint at Bayern, but Rueda highlighted how adapting to the conditions and culture in Germany is important.

“It’s important the club does everything possible to ensure that the player and his family feel comfortable in the new environment and can adapt. This has not always worked in Munich in the past.

“Jupp Heynckes understood Rodríguez well. His successor Nico Kovac, on the other hand, did not find a connection to Rodríguez.”

What will Luis Diaz offer Bayern Munich?

Diaz will provide Bayern Munich with a specialist option on the left flank with his pace, dribbling, penetrative movement and exceptional off-the-ball work.

He played a big part in helping Liverpool win the 2024/25 Premier League title, delivering a career-high output of 17 goals, 13 of which came in 36 league appearances along with five assists.

Bayern Munich and Kompany will hope Diaz at the same level in 2025/26 as they look to re-stablish themselves on the European stage.
