The Dallas Mavericks have had some interesting events over the past several years, and a once-disgruntled star duo is back on good terms.
Last season, the Mavericks shocked the world by sending Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in early February. The move was so shocking that almost no one in the NBA world believed it was real.
While simply moving off of Doncic was shocking, the Mavericks’ run to the NBA Finals only a few months earlier made it even more difficult to believe. Dallas lost that NBA Finals to the Boston Celtics, and one of the key themes in that matchup was Kristaps Porzingis’ opportunity to face his former team.
Porzingis’ time with the Mavericks ended on rocky terms, with the fit of him and Doncic being somewhat questionable. While many believed the star duo had some personal issues, it appears those problems have now been resolved, if they ever existed in the first place, as Porzingis recently said in an interview with Latvian site Sporta Centrs and translated by Athlon’s Sean Deveney.
“I have a normal relationship with Luka Doncic. Of course, the time in Dallas didn’t work out. It’s a phase that’s over. After that, we’ve met a lot – the Celtics and the Mavericks met in the Finals a year ago. In the European context, it seems like we haven’t played since 2017.”
As a couple of the most notable European stars in the NBA, it would make sense that the two still have a typical relationship, even if their pairing in Dallas didn’t work out. As both are in a new chapter of their careers heading into next season, it’s hard to imagine either could still hold any grudges from what happened on the floor a few years ago.
