Cooper Flagg’s time in Dallas is only just beginning, and some believe it could be the start of something special.
Over the past few months, the Dallas Mavericks have struggled to find their footing as an organization. From the blockbuster trade of Luka Doncic to Kyrie Irving’s injury, Flagg is the first true sign of steadiness within the franchise.
Of course, Flagg is far from the typical No. 1 pick. A clear-cut choice for the top selection before playing a single game at Duke, Flagg is among the rare prospects who have the potential to be a generational talent.
However, Flagg’s situation is far different from almost any other No. 1 pick in recent memory. While Dallas struggled and missed the playoffs last season, it is in a position to compete for a championship in the near future.
Former Maverick Devin Harris also recognized the interesting situation Flagg is in and had no hesitation comparing this situation to one of the most well-known in league history while he was at Mavs Academy Hoop Camp at Prestonwood.
“It’s the best situation for a No. 1 pick since Tim Duncan in San Antonio (in 1997),” Harris said. “I think it’s a perfect situation for him.”
Duncan, of course, would go on to become the greatest player in Spurs history, leading the franchise to five NBA championships over the course of nearly two decades with the team. While those are some extremely big shoes to fill for Flagg, if he can have even a fraction of the success Duncan had, this year’s No. 1 pick could go down as one of the best Mavericks of all time.
