Former Liverpool star makes bold claim on potential new signing

Liverpool’s search for defensive depth has sparked plenty of debate, and former Reds winger Jermaine Pennant has now thrown in a bold opinion.

With Marc Guehi’s future at Crystal Palace up in the air, Pennant believes the England defender would be the ideal fit at Anfield — and even better than one of the current starters.

Guehi has one year left on his Palace contract, and with interest from top clubs reportedly growing, the Eagles may be forced to make a decision soon.

Palace chairman Steve Parish has hinted at the possibility of a sale, while manager Oliver Glasner wants to keep his captain until their European playoff tie is finished.

That tug-of-war could open the door for Liverpool, who apparently see Guehi as a long-term option, especially if Ibrahima Konate does not extend his deal.

Jermaine Pennant compares Marc Guehi with Ibrahima Konate

Pennant did not hold back when comparing the two defenders. He said (via Sports Mole): “If Marc Guehi comes this summer, that would be a great signing. I think he’s actually a better defender than Konate, personally. Definitely on the ball; fewer mistakes than Konate.”

As per FBref, The numbers from last season tell a mixed story. Konate completed more passes overall, but Guehi created more attacking chances and was slightly better with long passes.

Defensively, Konate had the edge in tackles and aerial duels, while Guehi was more confident carrying the ball forward. It’s a classic case of “pick your player” — do you prefer safe passing or adventurous runs?

Pennant also mentioned the recent arrival of 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni from Parma, but he stressed Liverpool still need one more senior defender to prepare for injuries and future exits.

With Virgil van Dijk turning 35 next summer and Konate yet to commit to a new contract, Guehi could be the name that makes headlines before the window shuts.
