Former German star urges Man City to sign Barcelona veteran

Manchester City have made four major signings in the summer transfer window so far.

Pep Guardiola’s side had a disappointing run in the 2024/25 season, which ended in a third-place Premier League finish with them winning no major trophies.

Man City have started strengthening their squad by making new additions to it in order to return to their winning ways in the upcoming season, and the ongoing Club World Cup, where they have bagged victories in both matches played so far.

This has led to doubts having surfaced over some of the existing players in Guardiola’s squad, while some believe that more changes are required in certain roles. One such case is that of Man City’s first-choice goalkeeper Ederson.

Guardiola has earlier stated that he is not looking to make changes to the existing goalkeepers, and both Ederson and Stefan Ortega, along with new signee and third-choice shot-stopper Marcus Bettinelli, have been included in the squad for the Club World Cup.

However, Ederson has been underwhelming in the past season with several errors on the pitch and also sustained multiple injuries, missing 10 matches for the club. He contributed to 12 clean sheets and conceded 48 goals in 37 appearances for Man City.

Now, German football legend Lothar Matthaus has suggested that Man City sign a Barcelona star to replace Ederson.

What advice did Lothar Matthaus give Man City?

Matthaus has tipped Man City to consider Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen as a potential replacement for Ederson. The 33-year-old’s future at the Catalan club is currently clouded with uncertainties, with the La Liga champions reportedly expecting to acquire Joan Garcia’s signature soon.

Ter Stegen was sidelined for the majority of the last campaign due to injuries and managed to make only nine appearances. While speaking on Sky Germany, Matthaus stated (comments via Barca Universal) that the shot-stopper can contribute to Man City in the upcoming years.

“I don’t know what Manchester City are planning, but I don’t think they are very happy with Ederson. I think ter Stegen could definitely be a goalkeeper for the Cityzens for the next three or four years,” said Matthaus.

Ter Stegen’s current contract at Barcelona is valid until the summer of 2028, and while there has been no reported interest from Man City as of yet, it remains to be seen what’s next for the German goalkeeper.
