Former Chelsea star makes surprise transfer

Hakim Ziyech was born in the Netherlands, but he went on to become a Moroccan international who starred at the 2022 World Cup.

Ziyech helped Morocco make it to the semi-finals of the last World Cup, where they lost to the runners-up, France.

The winger did play for the Netherlands up to U21 level, and represented the country’s top clubs. He played for Heerenveen, Twente, and Ajax before joining Chelsea in 2020.

Ziyech had great success at Chelsea and was part of the side that won the Champions League in the 2020/21 season.

A frustrating moment in Ziyech’s career came in January 2023, when he was denied a transfer to Paris Saint-Germain due to an administrative error.

He eventually left Chelsea for Galatasaray, where he won the Super Lig twice before having a brief spell with Al Duhail in Qatar.

Ziyech has been a free agent since leaving the Qatari side, but now has a new club. Fabrizio Romano posted on X: “Ziyech to Wydad Casablanca, here we go! Moroccan star, back home as deal has been agreed.”

Wydad Casablanca were on the global stage last summer

Wydad AC competed at the inaugural Club World Cup in its expanded format earlier this year. However, it did not go to plan for the team from Morocco.

They finished bottom of Group G after losing to Al Ain, Juventus, and Manchester City.

However, they are currently second in Morocco’s top flight and are in the qualifying stages for the CAF Confederation Cup.

Ziyech is now 32, so at this stage of his career, it is fitting for him to play his club football in the country that he represents internationally.

Morocco has already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, but Ziyech has not played for them since last year.
