Former Chelsea star advises club on who to sign next

Following a mixed start to the Premier League campaign, the jury is still out on who Chelsea should sign next to reach the next level.

Given that central defence and goal have been a major problem for the Blues this season, most of the fanbase would like to see the Blues sign a new central defender and a goalkeeper.

However, former Chelsea star Marcel Desailly begs to differ when asked who Enzo Maresca’s team should look to sign next.

Chelsea invested heavily in attack over the summer by bringing in a number of attackers and wide players.

For instance, they signed Liam Delap and Joao Pedro to bolster their options up front, but Desailly believes that the team still lacks a world-class striker who will take them to the next level.

Given that the team spent so much money over the summer on their attack, it will be interesting to see if they listen to their former player’s advice.

Marcel Desailly advises Chelsea to sign another striker

While both Liam Delap and Joao Pedro have had their share of good moments in a Chelsea shirt, neither of them has managed to nail down the striker’s position as their own so far.

In the case of Delap, he has missed most of the season so far after picking up a hamstring injury in gameweek 3.

Though Delap is yet to prove himself in a Chelsea shirt, Desailly has advised Chelsea to sign another striker soon.

Speaking to The Standard, the Chelsea legend said: “They still have to build up some leadership and consistency other than [Cole] Palmer. I still believe that they need that experienced striker to be able to bring the team to another level.”

Despite this, the former Chelsea star has backed Enzo Maresca to succeed at Stamford Bridge.

Desailly was impressed with how Maresca guided the side to Club World Cup glory against Paris Saint-Germain and praised the Italian manager’s efforts.

“Tactically, Maresca has been magnificent,” the former France international said. “You can see that his squad understand his tactics, the way they put the pressure on the three midfielders of Paris Saint-Germain.”

But it remains to be seen if Desailly remains a fan of Maresca if he does not take his advice and chooses not to sign a striker.
