Former Chelsea midfielder’s advice to make Blues title contenders

Former Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell has suggested the one signing the Blues should make to transform themselves into Premier League title contenders.

Enzo Maresca’s team were not in the title race last season and only managed to sneak into fourth spot on the last day of the campaign.

However, there is a lot more expectation on the team going into the new campaign, especially after they clinched the UEFA Conference League title last season and also won the Club World Cup.

Meanwhile, fans and pundits are still divided about whether or not Chelsea will be in a title race this time around.

While the likes of Erik Ten Hag and Alan Shearer believe the Blues will be competing for the title, others like Jamie Carragher believe that they are still one or two signings away from a title challenge.

One of the areas that fans and pundits think Chelsea should improve is in goal, with some people calling for an upgrade on the current goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez.

Steve Sidwell’s advice to Chelsea to make them title contenders

Much like Carragher, Sidwell, too, believes that Chelsea need an upgrade in goal to compete for the Premier League title.

Therefore, it’s fascinating to hear transfer rumours linking them with a move for Paris Saint-Germain shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

According to Sidwell, Donnarumma is the type of signing at Stamford Bridge that would make the Blues compete for the league crown.

When asked who needs Donnarumma the most out of Chelsea, Manchester City or Manchester United, Sidwell told Sky Sports Premier League: “I would say Chelsea. If Chelsea get him, they’ve got the biggest chance to win the Premier League title in a long time. What he did last season was absolutely incredible…”

“I’ve seen [Robert] Sanchez when I was at Brighton, and I always had a question mark on him at Chelsea. I think if they get Donnarumma, it is huge, especially for the players in front of him – the defenders, the whole squad.”

Sidwell does have a point about Donnarumma, and he would certainly be a significant upgrade on Robert Sanchez.

If Chelsea do go on to sign Donnarumma, they could well go on to fight for the title and prove Sidwell right.
