In Sunday’s EuroBasket championship, undefeated favorites Germany edged Alperen Sengun and Turkey 88-83. Former Celtics point guard Dennis Schroder directed the offense for Germany, finishing with 16 points in 34 minutes and a game-high 12 assists.
Schroder provided both scoring and playmaking throughout the tournament, averaging 20.3 points in nine games — 10th among all players — and leading the field with 7.2 assists per game.
That performance earned him EuroBasket MVP honors, narrowly edging out German teammate and Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner. Schroder’s EuroBasket MVP adds to a long list of international accolades for Germany, including a FIBA World Cup MVP in 2023 and a spot on the FIBA Olympics All-Star Five team in 2024. Considering their NBA output, the recognition is notable for Schroder, who averaged 13.1 points and 5.4 assists last season across three teams, compared with Wagner’s 24.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists in Orlando.
Having already played for nine teams in his 12-year career, Schroder will suit up for his 10th this upcoming NBA season with the Sacramento Kings. He previously spent 49 games with Boston during the 2021-22 season after signing with the Celtics on the taxpayer mid-level exception. In those 49 appearances, Schroder averaged 14.4 points and 4.2 assists while sharing backcourt duties with longtime Celtic Marcus Smart.
To get under the luxury tax, Boston traded Schroder and two others to Houston midway through the season in exchange for his countryman, Daniel Theis.
Schroder now heads to Sacramento looking to carry his strong summer form into the 2025-26 season, with a chance to step in for franchise star De’Aaron Fox at point guard.
