Former Bayern Munich star criticizes club’s transfer policy following Diaz deal

Bayern Munich have had a frustrating summer in the transfer window as they were rejected by multiple players before they eventually signed Luis Diaz from Liverpool for a whopping €75m transfer fee.

The Bavarians failed to land any of their priority targets such as Florian Wirtz, Nico Williams or Nick Woltemade to date and as per several pundits they have overspent on Diaz, who is already 28 and wanted to move on from Liverpool.

Recently, former Bayern and Liverpool star Dietmar Hamann criticized the German champions over their transfer policy this summer.

He couldn’t believe the amount Bayern were ready to spend that amount on Diaz and claimed Liverpool were ecstatic receiving such a fee for a player who had two years left in his contract.

“Diaz is a very good footballer, but what Bayern are doing isn’t a business model. Bringing in a 28-year-old for that amount of money and then paying him even more than he earned in England? Liverpool are laughing,” Hamann told German outlet Heute.

“Coach Kompany isn’t letting the youngsters play. And I’ve heard there’s talent there like there hasn’t been in 10 years. Yet the German championship is still only possible through Bayern. Who else? Leverkusen will have a tough time, and it won’t be Leipzig either; Dortmund is the most likely option. The benchmark for Bayern will be the Champions League.”

While plenty of people have questioned Bayern’s big money pursuit of Diaz, Bavarian bosses believed the Colombian was the best option available to them in the summer window.

What did Maximilian Eberl say about Bayern’s push for Luis Diaz?

Bayern Munich’s director of sport Maximilian Eberl and other bosses have justified the high price for the Colombian winger stating his importance in Liverpool’s title triumph last season.

“Luis Díaz once again proved in Liverpool’s title-winning season that he was one of the Premier League’s absolute top players. Even though other stars like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk may have been more in the spotlight, Luis Díaz’s performances were on the same level. At Bayern, Luis can now attract even more international attention, similar to what Michael Olise did last season,” Eberl told BILD justifying Bayern’s move for Diaz.

Diaz featured in 50 matches for the Reds last season across competitions, registering 17 goals and five assists with 13 goals coming in the Premier League-winning campaign.

The 28-year-old was one of the most consistent players for Liverpool and he made up for his average output with his exceptional work-rate, something that impressed the Bayern bosses.

Diaz had a lukewarm preseason for Bayern Munich but fans will be hoping that the 28-year-old replicates similar form for the Bavarians in the upcoming season.

He is expected to make his official debut for the German champions in the DFL-Supercup against Stuttgart scheduled on Saturday, August 16.
