Former Bayern Munich captain fears star player may leave the club next summer

Bayern Munich have had a lukewarm summer transfer window until now as they have only signed Luis Diaz, Tom Bischof and Jonathan Tah whilst missing out on multiple priorities.

They reclaimed the Bundesliga last season, but still need to make a lot of ground to compete with the top Premier League and La Liga outfits in the Champions League.

The German champions are in a transitional phase as they are rebuilding the team after the departure of Thomas Muller.

Amidst all this happening around Bayern, former captain Stefan Effenberg shares a different perspective surrounding the future of a specific player.

The legendary German midfielder believes that Harry Kane may leave Bayern Munich next summer, given the club’s diminishing chances of competing in European competitions.

“I don’t see Bayern Munich as the favourite,” adding: “It will be exciting in Munich in the next one or two years. What will happen to Kane? He’ll probably leave in 2026. Neuer will also be out. A new hierarchy will have to be formed,” Effenberg told in an interview with Kicker.

Bayern Munich have shown a statement of intent with the signing of Diaz from Liverpool, but only time will tell if it’s enough for the Bavarians.

Is there a possibility of Kane leaving Bayern next summer?

When Robert Lewandowski moved on, Bayern Munich broke the bank to secure the signature of Kane from Tottenham Hotspur.

The England team captain became Bayern’s most expensive signing at €110m ($126m) transfer fee for the experienced marksman.

However, Kane has repaid the trust shown by the German champions as he has netted 85 goals in 96 games across two seasons in Germany.

While he has a contract until 2027 and has repeatedly said in the media that he is happy in Bavaria, there are incessant rumours in English media about his Premier League return.

According to BILD, Kane has a release clause in his contract, one that will be active in January 2026, worth €65m ($74m) transfer fee.

Hence, there are rumours surrounding his future in Bavaria as Steffenberg believes that Kane will evaluate his options after seeing the 2025/26 campaign.

If Bayern somehow fail to compete for the Champions League title, the Englishman may leave the club and return to the Premier League.
