Former Arsenal star issues worrying warning for Mikel Arteta

Arsenal registered a 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Sunday in the Premier League as the Gunners sealed Champions League football for the next season.

They started the season with a lot of promise but eventually lost their way. They hardly posed any threat in Liverpool’s journey to the Premier League crown while also crashing out of the Champions League in the semifinals.

It was yet another season which promised many things at the start, but eventually it ended in disappointment.

After the Newcastle win, Mikel Arteta delivered a passionate message to the fans about ending the five year trophy drought.

However, it goes without saying that the Spanish manager is under a lot of pressure to deliver a trophy next season. The team management have already invested a lot of money and are willing to invest even more, backing Arteta to the hilt.

However, former Arsenal star and football pundit, Paul Merson believes that Arteta could be in big trouble if his team aren’t competing for the Premier League crown.

“This Arsenal team is a good team but you’ve got to go and win something,” Merson told Sky Sports.

He believes that Arteta’s future will depend on if Arsenal are in the top two in the Premier League or not during Christmas.

“It’s not as easy as people think to win something and Arsenal keep falling short. Sometimes people fall short and it just becomes normal. That’s a worry. Arteta has got until Christmas. They will have to be in the top two at Christmas to keep on going.

“Arsenal have to make it count now and this is the last year. Before you know it players like Bukayo Saka will start questioning things if they don’t win anything. He’s got to be in the top two by Christmas or they’ll go for someone else.”

The last trophy that the Gunners won was five years ago when they defeated Chelsea in the FA Cup final in 2020. Since then, they have come close but haven’t got their hands on any of the silverware.

The North Londoners are going to break the bank in the upcoming summer transfer window as they are out in the market primarily for a new striker, winger and a midfielder. They may also look at depth options in other positions if they find the suitable profile.
