Lionel Messi and Inter Miami bowed out of the FIFA Club World Cup after a crushing defeat 4-0 against Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16.
That loss saw Inter Miami’s elimination from the competition, after becoming the first Major League Soccer team to reach the knockouts, and it was swiftly followed by fresh doubts over the Argentina icon’s future in Florida.
With his current contract at Inter Miami expiring at the end of 2025, several reports have suggested Messi could consider playing in a more competitive league for the six months leading up to the 2026 World Cup.
However, Inter Miami remain confident about keeping Messi at the club for longer, with his contract including an option for a 12-month extension.
Former Argentina star – and Messi’s former international teammate – Juan Sebastian Veron, has shared his thoughts on Messi playing in the World Cup next year.
What did Veron say about Lionel Messi’s chances in the 2026 World Cup?
Speaking after Inter Miami’s loss against PSG, Veron expressed his opinions on Messi’s chances in the upcoming World Cup.

“I saw him well, I had my doubts, but I saw him really well. Up against PSG, who have a different rhythm, they found it very difficult. It’s a logical question in a competition in which you come across different football realities,” as per GOAL.

“It will all depend on him. It’s clear he might find it more difficult against opponents and teams with different levels, but these are issues that a player like Messi can resolve in a different way, and better.”
While an official announcement about him signing a contract extension with the Herons awaits, Messi & Co. are now headed to play against CF Montreal in the MLS on June 5 at Saputo Stadium.
