Flyers predicted to sign $7 million goalie free agent

The Philadelphia Flyers could use help in goal.

There isn’t a ton out there in free agency, though.

That’ll leave the Flyers chasing after the consensus top option, just like everyone else.

Jake Allen spent 2024-25 as a mostly backup for the New Jersey Devils, but the 34-year old is the prize of the underwhelming litter.

Pro Hockey Rumors predicts the Flyers will be the team to sign Allen, a two-year deal worth $7 million ($3.5 million AAV).

“Allen hasn’t been a full-fledged starter for several years but is still considered the top goalie available on the open market this summer,” PHR writes.  “He’s coming off a solid showing in New Jersey as the backup to Jacob Markstrom and has played in at least 30 games in four straight seasons.  While there won’t be teams necessarily looking at him to be a number one option, he’s someone who can come in and stabilize the backup position and play starter minutes in the short term when injuries arise.  In a market bereft of proven and reliable options, Allen stands out as the one goaltender who can be counted on to be a steady performer, which will give him plenty of suitors.”

The Flyers spent last season with netminders Samuel Ersson and Ivan Fedotov, neither of whom came close to a 90% save percentage.

Allen spent this past winter playing in New Jersey. He made 29 starts and went 13-16-1, counting an additional relief appearance.

The 12-year veteran saved 90.6% of the shots against him with a 2.66 goals against average. Those are right in line with his career averages.

Allen played seven years with the Blues, then four in Montreal before the last two in New Jersey.

He likely will be going somewhere new for his next stop, and it might be Philly.
